In the neo-classical style, painted with 18th century style pastoral scenes, the hinged lid with engraved brass hinges enclosing a leather lined interior, above a scrolling leaf and flowerhead applied frieze with canted corners headed by ram's head with trailing husk chains; with reeded apron below on acanthus carved hoof feet, with carrying handles to the sides.

Provenance: Sold at Sotheby's New York 17 May 2006, Lot 541.

Condition: Old chips, knocks, marks and scratches commensurate with age.Various scratches/marks.Some rubbing to the gilding.Left side carved paterae moved.Some elements of the applied relief carving chipped and some small amount of carving missing.Base is flaking - paint and gilding. Overall good condition and highly decorative.
